To me this is as necessary as a good dishwasher. It helps me cook for longer. If I don't spend as much time and more importantly effort cleaning up, then I can cook more and create more. The Kitchen mat, in a similar sense has become this way for me. It helps me stand longer without pain. It reduces fatigue, reduces heel pain, cracked feet and a whole bunch of other pains (Specially with my FM condition).
I've actually managed to convince some of my friends to buy em' and they love it too :) They don't have such health issues but even then, their feet feel better.
After buying this and using it for about 3 years, I cannot do without it. I have to say it has become a must for me. In fact, check out the below pics of my really old kitchen mat and the new one.
Check out the thickness of the mat, this really helps in cushioning.
These are actually the cheaper kinds, I buy both them at Bed Bath & Beyond as well as Costco. (Please note I am not getting paid by either Bed Bath or Costco to promote these). However if I could afford it, I would buy a Gel pro mat. I've always eyed them before but never owned them. So I can't vouch for this type. If you'd like one, check it out at FoodBuzz
I would highly recommend them
- If you have wooden or stone floors,
- If you have lower back pain or knee pain
- If you find your feet hurting after cooking very often.

I keep thinking about one of those new gel mats...my wife never likes what i buy for the kitchen...even though it is my domain!!
ReplyDeletebut a good mat is important, at work I have special ones for my station since I am older than dirt...lol
I like a good mat too, Shree. My mother had plantar fasciiatis, which makes even standing very painful. I almost started to have it from working in restaurants, but I realized what was happening luckily. I went and bought some shoes designed for it! I always cook on a mat too, since I don't wear these shoes in the kitchen...
ReplyDelete@Chef Dennis - yep totally agree. A good mat IS important. Its not quite surprising that people start cooking more (aka my friends :)) once they get used to a mat. Makes life so much easier!
ReplyDelete@Stella - Oooh! I know how painful that can be, my mom has something similar. I have some 'special' shoes too but can't wear them all the time now can we?
I have a gel-pro mat in my kitchen and swear by it. Not as pretty as yours, but nice and cushiony :)
ReplyDeleteSolid post. Most of forget the importance and comfort of a good mat. I, too, have been eyeing a Gel Pro mat but alas, no mat yet.
ReplyDelete@Table Talk - How awesome! Wish I could get one :)
ReplyDelete@Lawyer loves lunch - Thank you :)
I LOVE my mats! I first discovered them when my mom (a Orthopedist) recommended them to me. I'm a 22 year old with a disease called Lupus, and arthritis is one of the many joys that comes along with it. After a long day at work or working out my joints always bug me while I cook but these mats help ease the stress on my joints tremendously..i highly recommend them for older people or anyone with joint pain.
